How to Create a Simple Monthly Journal Kit (And Finally Stay Consistent)

The 3-3-1-1 Rule:

There’s something magical about creative limits.

Not restriction.

Not rules that suffocate.

But gentle boundaries that free you.

If you’ve ever sat at your desk surrounded by too many papers, too many colours, too many ideas… and then created nothing — this is for you.

Today I want to introduce you to a beautiful little ritual:

The 3-3-1-1 Journal Kit Rule.

A way to create a limited-supply monthly kit that lives on your desk and makes your daily 15-minute practice effortless.

Why Creative Limits Calm the Mind

When our nervous system is overwhelmed, creativity shuts down.

Too many choices = decision fatigue.

Decision fatigue = procrastination.

Procrastination = guilt.

But when you narrow your world down to a curated box of intention?

You create safety.

You create focus.

You create flow.

This is mindful art practice in its simplest form.

How the 3-3-1-1 Journal Kit Works

3 Colours

Choose three colours for the month.

Example:

  • Blush pink

  • Deep black

  • Soft sage green

These become your visual container.

Every paper, texture, scrap, or embellishment must live within these tones.

Already, your mind relaxes.

3 Foundations (Paper, Texture, Vintage)

Within your chosen colours, gather:

  1. Papers – cardstock, scrapbook paper, book pages, printer paper

  2. Textures – fabric scraps, lace, tissue paper, handmade paper, old envelopes

  3. Vintage or background layers – old book pages, sheet music, tea-dyed paper, ledger sheets

You don’t need 100 pieces.

Just enough to play with.

Think curated… not chaotic.

1 Focal Theme for the Month

Choose one visual symbol.

For example:

  • Butterflies

  • Bees

  • Wildflowers

  • Birds

  • Keys

  • Hands

  • Doors

If you choose butterflies, then gather them everywhere:

  • Fussy cuts

  • Stamps

  • Stickers

  • Magazine images

  • Printable sheets

  • Old book illustrations

For 30 days, butterflies are your visual meditation.

Repetition builds identity.

Repetition builds depth.

Repetition builds confidence.

1 Word Ritual System

Now for the soul layer.

You need your words.

You have so many beautiful options:

  • Print a page of quotes and cut them into strips.

  • Cut words and phrases from magazines.

  • Write 30 words on paper tags.

  • Use affirmation cards.

  • Create a “word bowl.”

At the beginning of the month, prepare 30 words.

Place them in an envelope or little pouch.

Each morning:

Pick one.

That word becomes your prompt.

That word becomes your truth.

That word guides your 15 minutes.

How to Store Your 3-3-1-1 Kit

Place everything in:

  • A large envelope

  • A shoebox

  • A linen pouch

  • A vintage tin

  • A small drawer on your desk

This is your monthly creative container.

And here’s the rule:

✨ For your 15 minutes, you may only use what’s in the box. ✨

No rummaging. No adding. No overthinking.

Just create.

Why This Works So Well for Find Your 15

Because it removes friction.

When your timer flips over, you don’t decide what to use.

You simply reach into your curated kit and begin.

It becomes ritual.

It becomes grounding.

It becomes regulation.

This is how small daily art practice becomes sustainable.

This is how a junk journal becomes a mindful art practice.

This is how 15 minutes turns into a life rhythm.

Your Invitation

Before next month begins, create your 3-3-1-1 kit.

Choose your colours.

Choose your focal.

Prepare your words.

Curate your papers.

Then commit to 15 minutes a day using only what’s inside.

You don’t need more supplies.

You need a sacred container.

And sometimes blooming doesn’t require abundance.

It requires devotion.
