Wildflower Method – Technique #4

Sometimes the most beautiful parts of life aren't planned.
There is something magical about splattering tea across a blank page.
At first it feels completely wrong.
We've spent years trying to keep everything neat, perfect and inside the lines. Then we pick up a paintbrush, load it with cooled tea and gently flick it across the paper.
Tiny drops land wherever they choose.
Some are large.
Some are barely visible.
Some join together.
Others stand completely on their own.
And suddenly...
The page comes alive.
The splatters create movement.
Depth.
Texture.
A story that couldn't have been created any other way.
Just like life.
We spend so much of our lives trying to avoid the splatters.
We want everything to go according to plan.
The perfect career.
The perfect relationship.
The perfect family.
The perfect healing journey.
But life has a way of flicking little tea stains across our carefully written plans.
Unexpected illness.
Heartbreak.
Loss.
Burnout.
Dreams changing.
Children growing.
New beginnings we never saw coming.
At the time they can feel messy.
We often wish we could wipe them away.
Yet when we look back, those very moments become the places that gave our lives depth.
Without the splatters...
Our story would be beautifully neat...
But it would never feel truly lived.
The beauty of tea
One of the reasons I love using tea in my journals is that it doesn't create harsh perfection.
Tea stains are soft.
Gentle.
Organic.
Every drop dries differently.
Some bloom into delicate circles.
Some leave tiny freckles.
Some merge into larger pools of warm vintage colour.
No two pages are ever the same.
And neither are we.
Every experience we have leaves a gentle mark on our soul.
Not to ruin us...
But to make us uniquely beautiful.
How to create the Splattered Tea Effect
You'll need:
Strong brewed black tea (cooled)
A small paintbrush or old toothbrush
Watercolour or mixed media paper
Scrap paper to protect your workspace
Step 1 – Brew your tea
Make your tea slightly stronger than you normally would and allow it to cool.
Step 2 – Load your brush
Dip your brush into the tea, then gently tap or flick it with your finger.
Watch the droplets dance across your page.
Step 3 – Build slowly
Start with only a few splatters.
You can always add more.
It's much harder to take them away.
Step 4 – Let nature decide
Allow the tea to dry naturally.
Every mark will create its own little story.
Step 5 – Create
Now layer your papers, stamps, flowers, stitching, lace or ephemera over the top.
The tea becomes the quiet background that brings everything together.
A little Wildflower reflection
The horses have taught me this lesson better than anyone.
When I spend time sitting quietly in the paddock, they never ask whether life has gone to plan.
They don't care about yesterday's mistakes.
Or tomorrow's worries.
They simply stand in the present.
If the wind changes...
They adjust.
If it rains...
They wait.
If the sun comes out...
They graze.
There is no resistance.
Only acceptance.
Nature has never tried to erase its splatters.
The old tree still wears the scar where lightning struck.
The wildflowers still bloom after the storm.
The creek still flows around the rocks instead of trying to move them.
Perhaps we are invited to do the same.
To stop fighting every unexpected moment.
To trust that even life's tea splatters are becoming part of something beautiful.
This week's Soul Inquiry
Take your journal and create a page using the Splattered Tea Effect.
As the tea dries, ask yourself:
What unexpected "splatters" have shaped who I am today?
Which difficult season eventually became one of my greatest teachers?
Where am I trying to control life instead of trusting it?
What beauty has grown from something I once wished had never happened?
Write without editing.
Let your thoughts land on the page just like the tea.
Some will be tiny.
Some will spread.
Some may surprise you.
Remember...
Wildflowers don't bloom because life was perfect.
They bloom because they learned to grow through wind, rain, changing seasons and unexpected storms.
Maybe your splatters aren't ruining your story.
Maybe they're creating the most beautiful page yet.
