Wildflower Lessons – Technique #3
Torn Edges & Layers: The Beauty Hidden in Every Layer
One of my favourite sounds in the studio isn't the rustle of flowers or the kettle boiling for another cup of tea.
It's the gentle tear of paper.
Not a perfect cut.
Not a straight line.
Just the soft, uneven sound of paper finding its own edge.
For years, I thought I needed everything in my life to be neat and organised. I believed that if I could just keep everything together, I'd finally feel enough.
But life doesn't unfold in perfectly straight lines.
It comes in layers.
Some are joyful.
Some are painful.
Some are messy.
And every single one has shaped who we are becoming.
Perhaps that's why I love torn paper so much.
Every torn edge reminds me that imperfection creates beauty.
Wildflower Lesson #3 – Torn Edges & Layers
One of the simplest ways to add warmth, softness and depth to your journal pages is by tearing your papers rather than cutting them.
A torn edge immediately softens a page.
It creates movement.
It adds texture.
Most of all, it gives your journal that treasured, timeworn feeling that makes every page feel as though it has lived a story before it found you.
What You'll Need
Tea-dyed papers
Old book pages
Music sheets
Botanical papers
Handmade paper
Glue
Distress Oxide Ink (optional)
Blending dabber
Step 1 – Choose Your Papers
Gather a variety of papers.
Mix different colours, textures and weights.
Some smooth.
Some wrinkled.
Some delicate.
Some bold.
The contrast is what creates interest.
Step 2 – Tear, Don't Cut
Instead of reaching for your scissors, gently tear the paper by hand.
Turn the paper as you tear to create soft, natural edges.
No two tears will ever be the same.
That's exactly what we're hoping for.
Step 3 – Build Your Layers
Start with your largest piece.
Then slowly add smaller pieces over the top.
Allow the torn edges to remain visible.
Those layers create depth and guide the eye around your page.
Step 4 – Add Texture
Layer lace.
Botanical illustrations.
Pressed flowers.
Fabric scraps.
Music paper.
Vintage book pages.
Every layer adds another chapter to your story.
Wildflower Tip
If you'd like to make the torn edges stand out even more, lightly blend Distress Oxide Ink along the edges using a blending dabber.
A gentle touch is all you need.
The ink settles beautifully into the torn fibres, giving the page a soft vintage glow and helping each layer stand apart while still blending harmoniously.
Why This Technique Matters
When we layer papers, we aren't hiding what's underneath.
We're building upon it.
The first layer still exists.
It supports everything that comes after.
Life is much the same.
Every experience becomes another layer.
Our childhood.
Our friendships.
Our heartbreaks.
Our victories.
Our quiet seasons.
None of them disappear.
They become the foundation for the next chapter.
When you begin to see your journal this way, it becomes more than paper and glue.
It becomes a reflection of your own journey.
A Moment for Soul Inquiry
As you build your collage, pause for a moment and ask yourself:
What layer of my life has made me who I am today?
Perhaps there is a season you've been trying to hide.
Or perhaps it's the very layer that now gives your story its depth.
You don't need to erase it.
You can honour it.
Build upon it.
Grow from it.
This Is the Wildflower Way
Every page begins with one layer.
Then another.
Then another.
Until something beautiful begins to emerge.
Not because it was planned perfectly...
But because every layer was allowed to belong.
Your journal is no different.
Your story is no different.
Every torn edge.
Every wrinkle.
Every layer.
Every season.
They all have a place.
And together, they create something uniquely yours.
